CRCD is 20!

NFC STE NSC KIPT is celebrating the 20th anniversary since the establishment of the Center for Reactor Core Design (CRCD).

In 1999, within the frame of the Agreement for Cooperation between the United States of America and Ukraine Concerning Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Energy, NFC STE won a tender to establish an organizational unit - Center for Reactor Core Design (CRCD) and was awarded the right to participate in the Ukraine Nuclear Fuel Qualification Project (UNFQP). On this basis, the Ministry of Fuels and Energy of Ukraine and the US Department of Energy took a joint decision on establishing CRCD within the structure of NFC STE NSC KIPT. Since that time, NFC STE has started developing a new area of activity - reactor physics and safety substantiation of nuclear facilities.

CRCD specialists have received long-term training at Westinghouse, and they have unique experience in design and licensing of Westinghouse fuel for Ukrainian NPPs. In March 2003, National Science Center “Kharkov Institute of Physics and Technology” was issued a State Nuclear Regulatory Commission of Ukraine license for design of nuclear facilities, which is “limited to activities on design of nuclear fuel and reactor core components”, and is the only provider of services on WFA/RWFA safety evaluation for VVER-1000 power units in Ukraine. Through the entire period of WFA/RWFA operation during 2006 – 2017, safety evaluations for SUNPP-2, SUNPP-3 and ZNPP-5 were performed by CRCD. In accordance with the Memorandum on transfer of Westinghouse core design and safety analysis technologies, in 2005, Center for Reactor Core Design (CRCD) NFC STE NSC KIPT received the necessary equipment and computer technologies for design and safety analysis, including the ANC-H code for 3-D steady-state neutronic calculations. From the very beginning of the Project, within the framework of agreements with SE "NNEGC "Energoatom", NFC STE has been providing scientific and technical support for the design, licensing and operation of Westinghouse fuel.

The Expert Review issued by the Nuclear Physics and Power Engineering Department of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine “On NFC STE NSC KIPT qualification for scientific and technical support of nuclear fuel” and the Memorandum on Transfer of Equipment, Computer Codes and Manuals to Ukraine within the Framework of the “Implementing Agreement Between the Government of the United States of America and the Government of Ukraine Concerning the Ukraine Nuclear Fuel Qualification Project” confirm that CRCD NFC STE NSC KIPT is a unique entity to provide scientific and technical support for Westinghouse fuel operated in Ukraine’s NPPs.
