General Information and Activity Areas
The Reactor Core Design Laboratory design WWER-1000 reactor cores, including:
-
Selection of reload fuel inventory, including from different vendors (mixed cores);
-
Nuclear safety substantiation of fuel reloads:
-
Nuclear substantiation of new types of fuel, including nuclear safety analysis.
The Reactor Core Design Laboratory analyzes criticality and reactivity of the systems used to ship, store, and deposit nuclear fuel.
The Reactor Core Design Laboratory designs accelerator-driven sub-critical systems.
The Reactor Core Design Laboratory verifies and validates different nuclear design codes.
The Reactor Core Design Laboratory modifies and develops its own nuclear design codes.

Interfaces
The Reactor Core Design Laboratory closely interfaces with the Nuclear Fuel Design Laboratory, Safety Analysis and Licensing Laboratory, NSC KIPT Plasma Physics Institute, Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute, SUNPP and ZNPP Nuclear Safety Departments, SSTC NRS, PNNL, and Westinghouse EC.
The staff of the Reactor Core Design Laboratory provides semester-long instruction on “Core Design” to graduate students of Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute at the Steam Generator Building Department; 2-3 students of the Department prepare their Master's projects at the Reactor Core Design Laboratory.
